Mahadevi Verma was born in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh in 1907. She was married early and the death of her father-in-law made such an impression on her that she decided to learn further. She completed her masters in Sanskrit soon afterwards and started teaching. Her descriptions of pain and sadness are extremely moving. She is one of the pillars of the CHAYAVADA, a modern movement in Hindi Literature,the remaining three being Suryakant Tripathi 'Nirala', Jaishankar Prasad and Sumitranandan Pant. Sheis more popular for her poems than her stories and novels. She is renowned for her book of memoirs, Atita Ke Chalcitra (The Moving Frames of the Past) and Smriti Ki Rekhayen (The Lines of Memory). Her poetic achievements boast Dipshikha (The Flame of an Earthen Lamp), 1942. She died in 1987.
