यस्मिन् लोके विद्यमानाः प्रायेण सर्वेऽपि विषयाः व्यवस्थितरूपेण निरूपिताः भवन्ति सः '''विश्वकोषः''' इत्युच्यते।
'''विश्वकोशः''' (Vishwakosha) तु काचित् सन्दर्भार्थं रचिता कृतिः। अस्मिन् [[ज्ञान|ज्ञानस्य]] सर्वशाखानां विषये विवरणानि लभ्यन्ते। कदाचिच्च विश्वकोशे एकस्याः एव शाखायाः विषये प्रधानतया चिन्तनं प्रवर्तते। विश्वकोशे तु [[लेखा|लेखाः]] वर्तन्ते। प्रायेण एते लेखाः लेखशीर्षकानाम् अकारादिक्रमेण स्थापनेन संप्राप्यन्ते (कदाचित् विषयक्रमेण अपि व्यवस्थाप्यते)। अस्मात् एव कारणात् अयं [[शब्दकोशः|शब्दकोशात्]] भिन्नः वर्तते। यतः शब्दकोशे प्रविष्टे तस्य शब्दस्य विविधाः भाषिकाः आयामाः दृश्यन्ते, परमत्र विश्वकोशे प्रत्येकः लेखः एकामेव अवधारणां वर्णयति।
